The Thatcher years weren’t so good if you lived in South Wales, as I did.Maybe these women are neither Deborahs nor Jezebels, but something in between – neither specifically sent by God with a prophet’s call, nor the sworn enemy of God’s people devoted to evil false gods.Maybe they’re just well-meaning, bumbling sinners, whose every good-intention can move in the direction of hell nevertheless.

Whenever God raises up a Deborah or others like her, the temptation is to focus on the women and find fault with them. That’s easy. Without denying faults in the women, I believe the primary purpose of God in providences like this is to make us look at men and see their faults and failings. That’s the hard bit. We’ve got to resist the initial instinct to critique the women and fight to critique the male failures which came first and are far more fundamental and serious.

My question would be: even if they want to, how could Christian women be involved in todays difficult ‘dirty politics’ and still be obedient to 1 Peter 3:4 ? Do not think it is possible to be both a godly feminine women and a strong (‘manly’?) leader in the political world.Yes, in God’s providence He can do what He want and with whom what He wants, but we must live according to what is revealed (Deut.29:29).

May I just say “thank you” for this? Each of us are given talents, gifts and interests by God and sometimes they don’t fit what we consider to be conventional. I have been fascinated with politics and current events since I was 5 or 6 years old (even though my parents did nothing to encourage that interest.) Margaret Thatcher was one of my heroines growing up and while my highschool classmates had posters of movie stars hanging in their lockers, I had a picture of Ronald Reagan hanging in mine. I probably would not make the same choices that Sarah Palin has but I certainly feel a kinship with these women. It is very difficult to be a Christian woman in politics because you are often misunderstood by both your fellow Christians and by the political establishment. Thank you for being gracious in your treatment of this subject.

Although Israel came to Deborah for “judgment,” was that not in her role as a prophetess? Doesn’t Heb 11:32 seem to imply that, although he was a coward, Barak was “the judge” at the time of Deborah? Did Deborah’s prophesying under the tree require her to divert as much energy from serving Lappidoth as any of the positions that these wives and mothers are pursuing? Can you help us shed light on this topic from other Scriptures? The reason I ask these questions is that while I benefit much and often from your handling of the Word, I’ve heard this particular example put forward to make this argument before, and didn’t find it satisfying. Thank you for your ministry!

Dr. Murry,I could stomach this article a bit better if there wasn’t a picture of Sarah Palin posted above your writing. It seems like you’re endorsing a specific person (who’s view of preemptive war is, in my opinion, ungodly) by having her picture above the article.

Excellent article David. I always find it amusing how Mrs T was mocked for being upper class when she was a green grocers daughter and she actually hated the Whitehall and media elite that were (and still are) destroying the UK. I’ve always said you should take great comfort in who is against you – Mrs T was despised by socialists for seeking to open the country up to competition and freedom.
