It is right to think of ourselves as losers, because apart from God we are totally incapable of doing anything good or right. Our hearts are inclined always to evil, and in our flesh dwells no good thing. And we know that the positive-thinking, new age, good within you, philosophy is unbiblical. But that we are worms is not the whole story. There is a biblical view of and esteem for oneself that is healthy and necessary. Getting this right is essential to healthy Christian living.
"But we are not highly esteeming God if we fail to identify, acknowledge, and esteem His image and His work in us and through us." This is a good point. I think that low self esteem, I mean the kind that seems to impair one's ability to function, is fundamentally an obsession with the self. It is not all that different from an over-inflated self image. Both of them take our eyes off of Christ and focus them on self.

While I do understand your point, I actually get what Mr. Martin is trying to say; although I don't agree with how he said it. Both viewpoints have merit. But, I don't think it so much what WE have or have not accomplished, but it is what GOD has accomplished through us. It is not about us. We, as humans, keep focusing on us and THAT is the wrong viewpoint. Whether we succeed or fail, we succeed or fail in Jesus; and yes even fail because when we look at it correctly we will see that for us saved folks, all things work for the good to those who love the Lord. So, if we are walking with Jesus and we do see that we fail, as so often we will, we KNOW without a doubt that whatever it is that we have failed in God can work with it. It did not catch Him by surprise, He has already made a way. But, we need to keep our eyes on Him, not on us...low self esteem or not. And, until we start teaching people who to really look at we will continue to see our sisters and brothers walking around with the wrong image.
