David Murray’s article about Ms. Hirshman’s book is really an admission of defeat. But there is something more going on that Murray neglects and is furthering the gay movement. This is the fact that many people, not just the young, have redefined God, rethought God, re-adjusted God, restructured God and brought God up to date with the new progressive age. The triumph of the gay movement represents the success of the intellect over an archaic, outdated, outmoded Christian tradition which is no longer valid in our era. Christianity has two choices: either accept the reality of gay marriage or seriously modify the inflammatory, hateful, vindictive and anti-intellectual crap of St. Paul’s “judgment”. The Irish referendum yesterday is a lesson and a warning to everyone stuck in a morality that’s over 2000 years old. We have a new moral relativism now which is good for everyone because it’s more honest and free than that “white middle class Christian family values” morality. We are in the midst of a huge sea change. As with all changes there will be people who are offended and scream “God will punish America” and refuse to change. But as with all positive changes in history, those old believers will just go the way of all unnecessary and invalid and unworkable ideas. Even the Republicans are favoring gay marriage. The anti-gay crowd can thump their Bibles and scream “Sin Sin Sin” all they want, but once history has willed something, it can’t be changed or undone. The Irish election yesterday is a lesson and a warning. But when the dust settles, let’s see what this “new God” can do. Fair enough?

Or, you could humbly accept that you were wrong about gay people. And the author of this article completely ignore the many christians who support equality and the majority of gay people who ARE christian. Hey, there is no shame in admitting God’s truth. The church long ago admitted they were wrong about interractial marriages, despite the several biblical passages that clearly condemn it. But strict obediance to tradition, no matter how harmful, for the sole pupose of tradition, is not only blind, but immoral. And you can no longer pretend that the harm you cause for the sake of it isn’t real.

David: Very good post. I would like to add another of “what we can do”… we can be more prepared to engage the public about our convictions and biblical truth. I am a pastor and am pretty sure that most of our people are not prepared to have “the discussion”… instead we tend to go silent when it gets brought up at work or in the community. OR we get angry and spout off bottom line convictions without love. Instead, we pastors and Christian educators need to teach our people how to talk about it, answer the objections and accusations about “hate”, lovingly but unflinchingly bring the biblical texts into the discussion without rancor or apology, etc. I have found that gay activists sometimes actually respect the informed, firm but kind interaction. They are actually surprised by the non-homophobic engagement. I am afraid that by and large our brothers and sisters retreat or attack rather than debate. This we can do! Lets put some energy here.

There are two strategies that their agenda carried out very well which are ironically Biblical in their basis:
1. No compromise (which you articulated);
2. Teach them young.

Talk about taking a page out of the opponent’s playbook. May I respectfully state that many Christians fail miserably in these two areas? If the warriors keeping compromising and are ill-prepared, is it any wonder why the church lost many battles?
