But in general terms, I think series tend to go on too long. Unless you’re the next Martyn Lloyd-Jones! But remember he preached many of these long series on Friday nights, not Sunday services.

This is good confirmation for my convictions, both the pros and cons. When I go ‘off’ a series, my congregation doesn’t mind, but were I to go ‘topical’ or ‘thematic’ for more than about 4–5 Sundays, I’d have quite a few saying, ‘Thanks for those thoughts; now, when are you going to get back to a book of the bible.’ I love my people; they keep me grounded in the Word!

A further advantage I’ve found is that when preaching consecutively you naturally come across specific subjects that may be sensitive to congregation members. And then it is clear that you’re not specifically “picking on them” this week. But this is part of God’s word and we submit to all of it.
