But what boggles my mind is that the average preacher, certainly aware of these obstacles, continues to go on about preaching in a substantively deficient way.

Having served on two pastor search committees (interim and then his replacement), I heard far too many sermons whose content was too full of illustrations, personal pronouns, application, study bible note quotes, opinions, politics, etc., and not God’s word.

It seems the biggest obstacle of all is that too many pastors are so concerned with “pastoring” from the pulpit that they neglect the preaching of God’s word from the pulpit.
