Thank you for addressing this timeless subject. As a Christian (former pastor) who has a mental illness (Bipolar disorder), I have experienced God's grace through the body of Christ. I have recently been drawn to Puritan piety and, while pleasantly surprised, am not shocked their understanding of mental illness may well have been more advanced than we have thought.

Dr. Murray,
Was asked an interesting question tonight on the PB. I thought it originally was about this topic. It was kind of related but a person wanted to know if the Puritans had dealt with anything like Mental retardation, Autism, or other forms of Mentally Special Needs persons in any of their writings. I am not so sure some of it was diagnosed or if it was just relinquished to demon possession. Do you know of anything in their writings that would have addressed these types of mental handicaps?

Thank you for posting this article. Grace Abounding to the Chiefest of Sinners by John Bunyan describes his struggle with major depression and God's grace in good detail. I'm convinced that Bunyan's early experiences with depression and his gracious salvation were God's means of strengthening him for the persecution he experienced. Bunyan suffered the compulsive thought to "Sell Christ, Sell Christ" for several months. God delivered him and years later Bunyan literally refused to sell Christ for comfort and security. I've experienced similar compulsive thoughts and it's mentally excruciating. The thoughts come and there is no way to clear them from the mind. Bunyan's description of Giant Despair's club in Doubting Castle must have come from this.
