I have a doozy for ya. As a Christian, having gone through tons of deliverance sessions, for myself and others as well, I need to bring up two critical points here:

1. That deliverance from the supporting lies believed will over time drastically affect the perception of self, the world and God.

2. That a plan of attack based upon Genesis 3:1, “did God say”, is miraculously “Screen-changing”.

As it was pointed out in a previous comment, CBT, without Jesus Christ as the Foundation of Truth, is dangerous. But if one is willing to dive into the “Height” of what it is to “be” Truth, in other words, what is the character of Truth, then one has the possibility of reaching the miracles Jesus did and said we would do.

BCBT allows for the “Finished Work” to be made manifest, made a True, Living Way, to reach the Truth that was given to us. Rather than being satisfied with the limitations of a psychology based upon the physical brain, rather than circling that mountain, we are given a tool that allows us to destroy the idols society and generations have been feeding the momentum of.

Look at our physics. It’s based on “Force”. Force requires potential energy to grow more forceful, right? Kind of reminiscent of an Ouroborus.... the snake eating its own tail.

If you follow what I am alluding to here, the entire “secular system” is circular, getting nowhere in helping anyone but gaining more power from the lives it consumes.

The biblical version of this CBT approach is actually the, or a, door to the philosopher’s stone, the holy graal, miracles, etc.

What is a miracle but a manifestation of Truth in a world full of lies??

All I am saying is that in order for Truth to be True, then it has to have been, is, and will be. That makes it Finished.... as He said on the cross.

Coming from the Finished Work side of things, BCBT is the most amazing, freedom-giving, life-changing tool that modern Christianity has, along with deliverance. It then is no surprise that the churches stray so far from both. Like the pharmakeia spirit.... why TRULY HELP someone if that lessens business???

In all honesty, the church not willing to “search out the matter”, is more worried about bills and numbers, than the freedom of their flock.

Thank you for writing this...I stumbled on this while researching biblical pov on this very subject.

I suffer from life long PTSD. My parents were addicts. I was abandoned repeatedly as a child and saw things no child should ever see. I was Raped. Bullied. Beaten. Abused by boyfriends and husbands. Mocked by women. Chose an addict for a husband and father of my children.

I came to faith after my husband got into recovery. We ended up looking for marriage counselling in a very conservative Baptist church who taught that the bible alone was sufficient for treating the shame and trauma of my past. They practiced Nouthetical Counselling and stated that anything else was unbiblical. We were told to stop seeing our psychologist and counselled that this was purely a sin problem not a psychology problem.

They also told me that the abuse I was continuing to endure in my marriage was: a) because I did not know how to properly submit to him, b) needed to pray more, and c) God was using it to refine me.

While the biblical counselling did give me the insight into scripture and opened the door for me to explore a relationship with Jesus, it never helped to heal the damaged thinking that came from extreme trauma. If anything, it caused me to stay sick, become more of a perfectionist, self righteous, and hyper focused on the sin of others.

After 8 years of buying into this I felt beyond hopeless and depressed and almost took my life. By God's grace, a different pastor I sought counsel from referred me to a psychologist who specializes in PTSD. A year into it and not only has it saved my life it has deepened my relationship with my creator. It has also revealed to me how big God is and how He can and does work through means we would never expect...like unbelievers, like burning bushes, like talking donkeys. I am most careful now to not limit God to only capable of healing mind, body and spirit through "Christian's".

To those saying that an arm or heart or other body part ( or car) being fixed is different than the mind, I would argue that God our creator is behind the science and the inspiration of these practitioners whether they know it or not. There is no us and them....science vs. faith. There is only a big, powerful creator who spins entire galaxies and knows how many hairs are on your head and has made us(all of us) in His image.
You wrote:
"Someone who is only CBT but ignores the client’s physical condition would certainly fail in the long run if the client had a disease contributing to the problems."

Corey,

You are right, but you are also making an assumption that challenges the biblical view of body-soul unity. While it is true that some bodily diseases will contribute to psychological problems, it is equally true that psychological problems may be purely psychological (see Psa. 42:1). I wish things were more clear cut, but we the reality is we really do not know the exact etiology of most the psychological problems. For a psychiatrist, neurologist, or medical doctor treating the body empirically it matters, but for biblical counselors not really. Our goal is to apply the means of grace wisely with discernment and prayer regardless of etiology.

I agree Bob, that CBT without Christ Being Truth (ha, see what I did there) is actually dangerous. With no grounding in what our cognitions are or should be, we trade one lie for another. CBT also often focuses only on "positive" or happy truths. Many of the truths we need to face as Christians are not so happy, such as our sinfulness. To embrace the full Gospel, we need to understand the bad and the good.
I do think that most counselors (even all counselors) practice a variety of approaches. Someone who is only CBT but ignores the client's physical condition would certainly fail in the long run if the client had a disease contributing to the problems. I don't think any Christian counselor would ever be 100% CBT either. So while it's valid to say a Christian doing only CBT would be incomplete, I am not sure there are too many of those out there.
Great thoughts though, I have enjoyed reading this discussion.
