I am reading Matt Perman's "What's Best Next," and it is changing how I do my work. As a tax accountant aspiring to CPA licensure I am employed in knowledge work. In this field your work is often ambiguous and undefined (which is how most people feel about taxes anyway). It is my job to find out what needs to be done and how it needs to be done. Matt Perman gives keys on learning how to find those things out.

The eye-opener for me personally was his contrast of efficiency and effectiveness. Efficiency is not necessarily the key to success in knowledge work (might be different in manual labor), and striving for efficiency can be counterproductive! Getting things done, getting them done in the right order, and getting them done well, is effectiveness. If you don't do that, it makes no difference how fast the work got done.
