Great article! Hi David. All right? My name is Leonardo. I'm from Brazil. Hope so. I would like to know your understanding of Judges 16: 1-3; that is, does he believe that Samson actually had sexual relations with the prostitute in Gaza, since Hebrew gives us another possibility of translation and context another possibility of interpretation? Personally, I defend the understanding that Samson did not have sex with the prostitute in Gaza. I would like to know your opinion. I await your return.

Perhaps another link between Samson and Jesus is that he died with one on his right and one on his left, in Samson's case columns (Jud 16:29) and in Jesus' case rebels (Matt 27:38, Mark 16:27, Luke 23:33, John 19:18). It's interesting that all four gospels record this detail.

I don't understand how Luke Wiseman can comment that Samson was not motivated by personal revenge. In Samson's prayer he requests to be strengthen in order that he might be avenged for the loss of his two eyes. That sounds very personal. Am I missing something?

And nothing positive is narrated about those 20 years. Samson was a womanizer before the 20 years and after the 20 years. That was his bent.
Nothing negative is narrated about these 20 years. Given that what else is narrated is negative, it seems likely that these were the years in which he exercised and manifested the faith that is spoken of in Hebrews 11. That, and also the fact that he was given an honorable burial by his family.

The story of Samson isn't about Samson. It is about Israel. Called by God. Miraculous Birth. The first time anyone had a Nazirite vow from birth. The Nation of Israel was set apart by God and therefore given some specific prohibitions that made them different from every other people. Like Samson, they despised their uniqueness and violated their unique relationship. Given supernatural strength, but despised the gifts of God. There is a key phrase in the story of Samson that comes up twice... "she is right in my eyes". The book of Judges sums up the story of Israel with the twice repeated phrase... "every man did what was right in his own eyes". The whole book of Judges is about the tragedy of the apostasy of Israel. Samson is a mirror to show them who they had become.
