I think the problem/situation is more complex than you put it. While the chattering classes assume the education they helped develop is going over well, so that we all are malleable liberal peons who follow their PC diktat, this election has thus far proved them wrong. We must not underestimate the power of the Clinton network to throw everything possible at Mr. Trump to get him agitated over something that proves him too trivial for the moderately interested and flighty independent voters.

However, like the movie "Network" so accurately/scarily describes, the very pundits who continue to be agitated by the Donald's presentation and antics have given him many millions in free advertising by breathlessly following his every move in order to entertain their viewers. Long has the profit motive overtaken any search for truth or fact-checking in FOX/MSNBC/NBC/ABC/NPR. Witness the number and frequency of ads and product placements, and the air time they use to sell "the Donald" is like so many infomericals you will find on the late-night QVC (and similar) channels. The Network, this corporate conglomerate of 6 major companies owning almost all of news, seeks a vaguely angry populace who hangs on the words of the mildly deranged renegade who promises much but will keep the status quo in the end. And they will help continue to prescribe Big Macs and Coke and Percocet and TV dramas and Superbowl performances to drown out any erstwhile intelligent thought. Now, America has its most blantant group of irreligious bread-and-circuses candidates...Trump and Clinton/Sanders.

Just wondering, is the isolated journalist Wendell Berry? The pundits on mainstream media don't ever report facts accurately or honestly, so I don't even watch them. The worst thing they do is ignore the most significant events that don't support their narrative, and they inflate anything that does, before fact checking. Then after the truth becomes so evident they can't report the lies anymore, they never apologize, never issue a retraction, or keep it so quiet and hidden no one notices. They don't care that they haven't squashed Trump! They ARE influencing the vast majority of Americans--look at all the unthinking liberals who repeat what's said on the major networks, NPR, CNN and MSNBC. They've been a success at making America a failure.
