David, with respect, I don't think you understand the word "necessary". If something other than the item in question can be used to reach the same conclusion, then it is not necessary. Simply because you use secular psychology to arrive at the truth does not mean that it is necessary. Likewise, I don't think you fully understand the meaning of the word "sufficient". For biblical counsel to be sufficient it must entail everything that is necessary. If there is anything necessary outside of that thing that is considered sufficient, then it cannot be sufficient.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I love the strong language of "necessity." I think this is one of the gaping holes in much of the epistemology driving the biblical counseling movement. They (at least a large chuck of them) view extra-biblical knowledge as "helpful" but not necessary. In their view, to admit that this knowledge is necessary would be, somehow, to undermine biblical sufficiency. Far from it! Thanks David. I think this article is a needed challenge and corrective to the often misunderstood doctrine of sufficiency promoted in biblical counseling circles.

Hello David, you said that the Bible "...does not give us any detail about how to recognize the signs, what are the usual patterns of denial, what steps should be taken for a victim’s short-term and long-term safety, how to respond to the PTSD that sometimes results, and so on."

I beg to differ. I believe the Bible gives us a lot of detail about that. The problem is than most Christians have been not paying enough attention to what the Bible tells us about the mentality and tactics of evildoers and how they creep into the church and pass themselves off as Christians. It also tells us a lot about the oppressed and afflicted, and gives us principles we should follow in responding to victims, such as 'do not break a bruised reed'.

I invite you to check out the blog I lead, A Cry For Justice. Here is a link to our FAQ page: https://cryingoutforjustice.com/faq/

Thank you for making the case that the church needs to learn about abuse from those who have done the most research. Many Christians are duped by abusers and unable to truly help the victims. Perhaps rejecting this wisdom is the reason why.
