David, thanks for the links, especially the re-post of Mark Jones article on the Death of the Prayer Meeting. Last week, we declared it to be “Prayer Week” at our church. We had four noon to 1PM meetings and three evening prayer meetings culminating in a Thursday night (National Day of Prayer) meeting. Despite a sermon on prayer and lots of PR they were all sparsely attended (maybe 30 people on Thursday night). I guess it was the sermon? Seriously, I am in general pleased with where our church is headed with prayer. We have a weekly corporate prayer meeting on Wednesday nights, and we have worked really hard to teach about prayer. I and the other pastors lead and hardly ever miss a corporate prayer meeting. However, I think what’s going on (lack of people praying) is a barometer of where my church (and the church in the USA) is spiritually. It really concerns me. How can we be so lax about prayer? This article is a motivator for me to pray more for the people in my church and to keep beating the drum.
