How to listen to boring lectures (and sermons?)

Dr. Ralph Nichols says at the end of a 10-minute lecture most college freshmen will have retained only half of it. Then, 48 hours later they will have forgotten half of what they did remember.

Of course my students don’t need to read this ;-) but….here are ten ways to listen to boring lectures.

    The 10 ways all point to active vs. passive listening. Seeing the information organized on a screen also helps. If there’s an underlying motivation to active listening, such as a grade, then it makes listening that much easier. The listener has to motivate himself either way to get the most out of any lecture or briefing.
