Dr. Ralph Nichols says at the end of a 10-minute lecture most college freshmen will have retained only half of it. Then, 48 hours later they will have forgotten half of what they did remember.

    The 10 ways all point to active vs. passive listening. Seeing the information organized on a screen also helps. If there’s an underlying motivation to active listening, such as a grade, then it makes listening that much easier. The listener has to motivate himself either way to get the most out of any lecture or briefing.
