Why are you here? Why are you in this world? What’s your purpose, your aim, your goal? What would make your life happy? What would make your life worth living?
Lots of fun? Lots of friends? Doing well at school or at sports? None of these things are wrong but I want you to aim higher, to have an even bigger goal.
When John the Baptist was born, everyone rejoiced. His dad was especially happy because God gave him a message about John’s life purpose, his goal, his aim. Let’s look at this message in Luke 1:76-79 to learn three lessons about finding a purpose in life that will make us happy and useful.
FIND JOY IN SERVING GOD (76)
- He was a prophet of God
- He was a preparer for God
FIND JOY IN SAVING SOULS (77-78a)
- He spoke about salvation
- He spoke about the forgiveness of sins
- He spoke about the tender mercy of God
FIND JOY IN SHINING LIGHT (78b-79)
- The sun gives light in the dark
- The sun gives life to the dying
- The sun leads the lost
Whatever else we do in life, nothing will make us happier than serving God, saving souls, and shining as lights.
