In a recent Instagram post, Tallulah Willis described her struggles with body dysmorphic disorder. She said she used to punish herself for resembling her dad Bruce Willis instead of looking like her mom Demi Moore.

Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental illness involving obsessive focus on a perceived flaw in appearance. The person often spends hours a day trying to fix a minor or imagined flaw with cosmetics, exercise, and so on, and it’s often accompanied by debilitating anxiety, embarrassment, and social isolation.

How should we view our bodies? Let’s see how Jesus viewed them in Luke 22:37-43.

What is the worst temptation? Some say it’s sexual temptation. Others say it’s pride. Jesus says the worst temptation is fighting against God’s plan. The worst temptation was the first temptation in the garden of Eden, and it was also Christ’s biggest temptation in the Garden of Gethsemane.  What’s the best strategy to defeat the worst temptation? In Luke 22:39-46, Jesus shares his plan for fighting the temptation to fight God’s plan.

How often have you thought, “What’s the point in giving anything to the Lord when I have so little to give?” We look around and see how much others can give and get discouraged at our pitiful pittance. The church treasurer gives us our end-of-year statement and we think, “Well that did next to nothing.” But how does Jesus view our giving?  He’s got a most encouraging answer for us in Luke 21:1-3.

Jesus was the most emotional person that ever lived. He had greater joy than anyone ever and greater sorrow than anyone ever. If we want to be like Christ we have to feel like Christ. We have to ask not only “What would Jesus do?” but, “What would Jesus feel?” So, how do we feel like Jesus? In Luke 19:28-44 we learn from Jesus how to feel like Jesus as he swings from maximum joy to maximum sorrow. Let’s feel what he felt and why.

A Savior for the Selfie-centered

John 1v29-4

We live in a selfie society. At no time in human history has there been a culture which spent so much time, energy, and money on getting people to look at ourselves. People live ‘look-at-me’ lives, and measure their lives by how many follows and likes they get for themselves. But selfie-centeredness has not produce self-satisfaction. One scientific study found that the “culture of selfie taking in some cases has resulted in some forms of obsession with self (narcissism), low self-esteem, depression and its’ associated suicidal ideations, Body Dysmorphic Disorder and even actual deaths.”

How do we stop selfie-centeredness? Let’s ask the least self-centered man that ever lived (apart from Jesus), John the Baptist.
