How do I love Christ more? Which Christian hasn’t asked that question many times? Christ is so loveable, so worthy of so much love, and yet I do not love him as he deserves. I do not love him as I want to love him. I love him more than I did when I was an unbeliever. But it’s still sapling love. I want cedar love. I want sequoia redwood love. How do I grow my sapling love into redwood love? Jesus gives us bags of love fertilizer in Luke 7:36-50.

Who is your favorite boss? Your favorite coach? Your favorite teacher? Your favorite mentor? What do they all have in common? They all have a combination of authority and empathy, don’t they? Researchers have found that we will not let anyone be our guide in any part of our life unless they have both authority and empathy. We want guides we can respect for their competence and trust for their compassion.

Who has so much authority and empathy that we can trust them to be the guide of our souls? Luke 7:1-17 points us to a spiritual guide with full authority and perfect empathy

I’ve not had a lot of success with bass fishing. So, a couple of weeks ago, I subscribed to the online Outdoor Channel to get some lessons and encouragement from the experts. I’m hoping I’ll have as much success as the discouraged disciples in Luke 5:1-11. That passage also gives an encouraging answer to the question: “What should I do when I’m discouraged about my soul-fishing?”

What is the Gospel?

11. Luke 4_16-30

“What is the Gospel?” That’s such a simple question, yet it’s frighteningly easy to get wrong. We’d expect unbelievers to get it wrong and they do, usually answering with various versions of: “Try your best. Be nice. Do good.” That’s not the Gospel. But believers get it wrong too, with their answers also tending to emphasize the human response to the Gospel. “Believe, repent, seek, call, etc…” That’s not the Gospel.

So, what is the Gospel? Who better than Jesus to give us the answer, which he did in Luke 4:16-30, when he preached his first sermon in his home synagogue in Nazareth.
